Continental Mathematics League
Daisy Brook participates in the Continental Mathematics League, or CML, at both the 4th and 5th grade. CML is designed to improve a student’s problem solving capabilities. Over the course of the school year, students participate in five meets, or competitions, with each meet being comprised of six extremely challenging mathematical problems. These problems are complex and often involve multi-step and multi-operational strategies in calculating the answer. Daisy Brook students are also participating with other students of the same grade level in schools throughout the United States, as CML is a nationally recognized organization that is open to all schools. Daisy Brook’s participation has been made available by a generous grant from The Gerber Foundation, which is administered through NC-RESA.
This has been Daisy Brook’s second year of involvement. Daisy Brook’s participating 4th and 5th grade students have shown continuous improvements in their scores from meet to meet, which has been great to see.
This year, two 5th grade students achieved perfect scores on at least one of this year’s meets, and one 5th grade student achieved a perfect score on two of this year’s meets. The achievement of each of these students is to be commended, as a perfect score is not that common. The students achieving this distinction are pictured below.

Reading for Ice Cream
During the months of April and May, Daisy Brook students are being encouraged to continue reading on a daily basis and having their reading minutes recorded and verified by their parent/guardian. Many of our students have been doing this very faithfully since the beginning of the school year through the Book-It Program, sponsored by Pizza Hut.
During the months of April and May, Mr. and Mrs. Clark, owners of Lake Side Swirl located in Fremont Lake Park, are encouraging the daily reading habits of our students to continue by offering free ice cream passes to those students who continue to achieve their monthly reading goals. The monthly reading goal for your child will remain the same as his/her past monthly goal.
We are very appreciative to Mr. and Mrs. Clark for making this reading incentive program available to Daisy Brook students in April and May. We are hopeful that your child will continue to read daily, and have this become an ongoing habit even into the summer months.
If you have any questions, please call your child’s teacher.

In an effort to recycle good stories, there will be a Used Book Sale by the Daisy Brook Media Center. This will include both fiction and non-fiction items, along with magazines. Hard covers will be 50 cents, soft covers 25 cents, and magazines 10 cents each.
We are holding this sale in order to place books in the hands of students and allow us to retire some of our collection in order to make room for new items. Proceeds from this event will benefit your children directly by adding more books to the school library.
Also, if you have any books or magazines that you no longer want, consider donating them to the Daisy Brook Media Center for this sale. Just keep in mind the books and magazines should be at student interest level. These items can be dropped off at the Media Center or office anytime. Please indicate they are for the Used Book Sale. Thank you for your consideration!
Come join us and find some great reads!
Sincerely,
Diane Greiner

A.C.E.S. Day
Daisy Brook Students Join the World’s Largest Exercise Class
Each May, millions of school children all over the globe will exercise simultaneously in a symbolic gesture of fitness and unity. This non-competitive program has proven to be educational, motivational, and fun. Starting its 18th year, the event known as A.C.E.S. (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) has reached millions of children, parents, and teachers all over the world, including participants from over 50 countries.
A.C.E.S. With-a-Friend will be staged for the seventh consecutive year at Daisy Brook Elementary School on Wednesday, May 2 starting at 10:15 a.m. The “With-a-Friend” designation encourages children to invite family and friends to join the fun in motion! Adults who practice regular, healthy physical activity are valuable role models to guide children in choosing to live healthy lifestyles. Please join us and share in promoting the message that moving is good—and fun—for all of us!
The activity for this year’s event will again be Roll-A-Dice Fitness Challenge. It challenges students to perform a variety of stretching, strengthening exercises and locomotor movements in a non-stop 15 minute total body conditioning workout. Each participant is encouraged to challenge themselves at an appropriate level for their current fitness. To add to the fun and challenge students are also encouraged to match their movement to their partners and the beat of the music. Music will again be provided by local businessman, Mr. Doug Harmon.
If you decide to join us, please arrive before 10:15 a.m. and go to the school office to sign in. You can join your child and they will teach you how to perform the exercises. Do only those movements/exercises you can comfortably perform. If you prefer—come and just watch! All are welcome to share in spreading the message of the value and importance of physical activity in our lives.
Get yourself moving—for the health of it!

Science Olympiad
This year, Daisy Brook’s Science Olympiad Team enjoyed learning more about science and performing a wide variety of scientific investigations during their after-school club meetings. As part of their learning process, the students prepared investigations that they then presented to other elementary aged students and their parents at a Family Fun Night held at Daisy Brook on March 12th. Pictured below is a sampling of some the hands-on learning investigations that were presented by the students. It was a wonderful evening of learning for everyone involved.
A special thanks to Mrs. Amy Wojcicki who served as the Science Olympiad team’s volunteer coordinator this year. Science Olympiad was made available through a generous grant from The Gerber Foundation, which is administered through NC-RESA.

A Great Research Tool:
In an effort to update our reference materials, Fremont Public Schools has purchased an on-line district license for the World Book Encyclopedia. Because the encyclopedia is an on-line resource, it is continually being updated with new information from around the world as it happens. Fremont students can access this resource from any school computer that is connected to the internet.
What is really special, however, is that students can also access this resource from a home computer with internet capability. To access this resource from home, you must type in the URL: www.worldbookonline.com. When it asks for a Username, put in: fremont1 and when it asks for a Password, put in: packers. Then simply follow the links for the information you are seeking.
This research tool is already proving to be a great help to all of our students. It is now hoped that it can be a valuable resource within the home as well.
