Dear Parents, February is the greatest month at Pine! Just when everyone feels as if winter couldn’t possibly get any longer, along comes February with Valentine’s Day and the fascinating study of Community Helpers. Very Important Persons from the fire department, the police department, the post office and the medical profession visit Pine to share information about their occupations. Students take a field trip to city hall to get a “behind the scenes” look at city government and the police department. They also get a close look at fire trucks, patrol cars and sirens. They visit behind the counter at the post office and mail a postcard to their homes to see how the mail system works. They learn how to stay healthy. They learn that some of their parents are Community Helpers—and their teachers are too! Pine Street students and staff would like to say a special “THANK YOU!” to our VIP presenters. In addition to the great information shared, it’s obvious that all of you enjoy what you do! Your enthusiasm is wonderful for our students to see and encourages them to consider these occupations as career choices in their own lives. What could be better than meaningful work that you enjoy doing? One
additional note: please note the boldfaced schedule changes in the column on
the left. Our planned early release days for Feb. and March are now full
days; March 13 is now a NO SCHOOL day for everyone except juniors who are

FPS SEVERE WEATHER POLICY |

|
|

The decision to alter or cancel the normal school schedule is always a difficult one. However, the most important factor is the safety of students and employees. The following guidelines explain the steps taken in making a determination: 1. In questionable weather, at 5:00 a.m. the Director of Transportation travels the district’s more difficult roads. 2. In consultation with the Director of Transportation, the Superintendent reaches a decision by 6:00 a.m. to hold classes, schedule a delay or cancel classes. 3. If there is a delay or cancellation of classes, WOTV-Channel 8, WZZM-Channel 13, and WWMT-Channel 3 will carry the announcement on television. SUNNY (100 FM), WOOD (1300 AM or 105.7 FM) and WMUS (107 FM) radio stations are contacted to make the announcements as well. Parents may also call the school information line at 924-7317 to inquire about delays or school closings. 4. By 6:30 a.m., buses are leaving the garage to pick up students. 5. Once children are in school, the district will generally not cancel school based on weather “predictions.” |

PLEASE NOTE: If parents believe conditions are not safe for their children, they may keep them home or pick them up from school if conditions deteriorate while school is in session. |
